Doomed Flight Mystery Deepens

Ocean Debris Not Part of Flight 447

FERNANDO DE NORONHA, Brazil (June 5) — France’s transportation minister said Friday that French forces have found no signs of the Airbus A330 airplane that vanished over the Atlantic and urged “extreme prudence” about suspected debris taken from the ocean.

Dominique Bussereau said he regretted that an announcement by Brazilian teams that they had recovered plane debris from Air France flight 447 turned out to be false.

The Brazilian air force announced Thursday afternoon that a helicopter plucked an airplane cargo pallet from the sea that came the Air France flight, but then said six hours later that it was not from the Airbus.
“French authorities have been saying for several days that we have to be extremely prudent,” Bussereau told France’s RTL radio. “Our planes and naval ships have seen nothing.”
Bussereau said the search must continue and stressed that the priority was finding the flight recorders. The plane went down Sunday night with 228 people on board in the world’s worst aviation disaster since 2001.
France’s defense minister and the Pentagon have said there were no signs that terrorism was involved. Brazil’s defense minister said the possibility was never considered.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, speaking Thursday in Rio de Janeiro where he attended a Mass honoring the crash victims, said experts had not found signs that would back up a “terrorism theory.”

“But we cannot discard that for now,” he told reporters. “Nothing leads us to believe that there was an explosion, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t one.”

“All the paths are open and we will not give priority to a single premise because that would be immoral,” he added.

Investigators are looking into whether malfunctions in instruments used to determine airspeed may have led the plane to be traveling at the wrong speed when it encountered turbulence from towering thunderstorms over the Atlantic Ocean.

Two aviation industry officials told The Associated Press on Thursday that investigators were studying the possibility that an external probe that measures air pressure may have iced over. The probe feeds data used to calculate air speed and altitude to onboard computers. Another possibility is that sensors inside the aircraft reading the data malfunctioned.

If the instruments were not reporting accurate information, the jet could have been traveling too fast or too slow as it hit turbulence from violent thunderstorms, according to the officials.

Drew Peterson:Ex-Cop Indicted in Murder of Third Wife

Authorities say former Illinois police sergeant Drew Peterson has been indicted on a murder charge in the death of his third wife.

The Will County state’s attorney’s office says the indictment was issued Thursday in the death of Kathleen Savio. It did not immediately give details but scheduled a news conference for later Thursday.

Savio was found dead in a dry bathtub on March 1, 2004. Her death was initial ruled an accidental drowning. But after Stacy Peterson’s disappearance, investigators began taking a second look at Savio’s death. Her body was exhumed and ruled a homicide.

Savio’s family was relieved to hear of Peterson’s arrest.

“The state police had been telling us the day was coming. We kept hearing it for about eight months. I’m almost in tears here. It’s been so hard for our family,” her brother, Nick Savio, told WLS, the ABC affiliate in Chicago.

“Right now we are ecstatic, we are just so happy,” another brother, Henry Savio, told NBC’s Chicago affiliate. “He’s being arrested for the murder of my sister, Kathleen.”

Documents released in Casey Anthony case

ORLANDO, Fla. — Prosecutors have released more documents in the case of an Orlando mother charged with murdering her toddler daughter.

Hundreds of pages of documents were released Friday. Among them was an interview with the sheriff’s deputy who responded to a meter reader’s repeated phone calls to check out woods where Caylee Anthony’s body eventually was found.

Deputy Richard Cain was fired earlier this year after an internal investigation found his response to be negligent.

Tipster Keith Williams told investigators that former Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Cain “kind of brushed me off” when he called authorities last August asking them to examine stuffed animals he discovered near the woods where Caylee’s remains eventually were found.

Williams’ call came several days after meter reader Roy Kronk called authorities to report what looked like a skull in the same woods near where Caylee lived with her grandparents and mother. Cain responded to Kronk’s call but brushed off the meter reader’s suspicions, according to the documents.

An internal investigation found the deputy’s response to be negligent. Cain is appealing his firing. In both cases, he said he searched the area and saw nothing suspicious.

Kronk called authorities on three consecutive days last August to report the suspicious items. Caylee’s remains were not discovered until five months later when the meter reader returned to the woods last December and found them.

Caylee’s mother, Casey Anthony, has been charged in her daughter’s death. She has pleaded not guilty and said that Caylee was kidnapped by a baby sitter.
